In recent years, Caribbean beaches have been facing an unusual challenge - massive amounts of brown seaweed called Sargassum washing up on their pristine shores. The Growing Seaweed Challenge

Since 2011, climate change and its related effects have caused increasing amounts of Sargassum seaweed to drift across the Atlantic Ocean and pile up on Caribbean beaches.

Using satellite imagery and ocean current models, they can now provide forecasts up to six months in advance of where the seaweed might appear.

This early warning system helps coastal communities prepare and organize collection efforts before the seaweed reaches their shores.

  • Using U-shaped barriers to collect it efficiently
  • Processing it within 24-48 hours of collection

2. Processing Steps

 

  • Washing with fresh water
  • Careful drying
  • Grinding into powder
  • Proper storage and packaging

 

 

Safety Considerations

Before rushing to use Sargassum in various products, researchers needed to ensure it was safe. A team of scientists analyzed samples from four Caribbean countries: Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Belize. They tested for:

1. Heavy Metals

 

  • Found that while most heavy metal levels were safe, arsenic levels were higher than ideal
  • Discovered that proper processing methods could reduce these levels
  • Determined that small quantities could be safely used in various applications

2. Pesticides

 

  • Tested for 531 different pesticide residues
  • Found zero pesticide contamination
  • This was particularly encouraging for potential food and cosmetic uses
